Evaluating a Temporal Causal Ontology
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe an experimental method to evaluate options within an ontology. (I) We commit to some precise description of the task of a theory written in an ontology. (II) A mutator automatically generates variants to known problems according to the diierent ontological options. (III) We try to perform the task over the mutations. (IV) We search for cases where the task fails. In this framework, ontological options can be assessed as follows. The better ontological options fail less on the task. This framework is instantiated in the context of a causal ontology. Four variants are proposed for handling time in the given ontology. Two of those four are found to be clearly superior and two were found to be clearly inferior.

Context-aware Modeling for Spatio-temporal Data Transmitted from a Wireless Body Sensor Network
Context-aware systems must be interoperable and work across different platforms at any time and in any place. Context data collected from wireless body area networks (WBAN) may be heterogeneous and imperfect, which makes their design and implementation difficult. In this research, we introduce a model which takes the dynamic nature of a context-aware system into consideration. This model is con...
متن کاملThe Rich Event Ontology
In this paper we describe a new lexical semantic resource, The Rich Event Ontology, which provides an independent conceptual backbone to unify existing semantic role labeling (SRL) schemas and augment them with event-to-event causal and temporal relations. By unifying the FrameNet, VerbNet, Automatic Content Extraction, and Rich Entities, Relations and Events resources, the ontology serves as a...
متن کاملAn Ontological Consideration of Causal Time in Qualitative Reasoning Systems
Human recognition of causal relations is based on recognition of time delay between the cause and the effect . Little, however, is known concerning temporal meaning of causal relations generated by qualitative reasoning systems . Aiming at explicit description of time concepts underlying the models and the causal reasoning engines, this article proposes a causal time ontology which defines a se...
متن کاملThe temporal representation and reasoning of complex events
This paper introduces a formalization of complex events. In particular, a formalism is presented to represent intentional and causal events in narrative contexts, and in their mechanisms of composition. Complex events have been defined through classes of a formal ontology that has been called the Ontology of Complex Events (OntoCE). This approach has allowed for the applications (reuse) of exis...
متن کاملNo Time, No Wholes: A Temporal and Causal-Oriented Approach to the Ontology of Wholes
What distinguishes a whole from an arbitrary sum of elements? I suggest a temporal and causal oriented approach. I defend two connected claims. The former is that existence is, by every means, coextensive with being the cause of a causal process. The latter is that a whole is the cause of a causal process with a joint effect. Thus, a whole is something that takes place in time. The approach end...
